Microdermabrasion (MDA) is one of my favorite skin treatments. Let’s call it the creme de la creme of all facials. It can be done on almost any skin type. MDA can be used to help with anti-aging treatments, acne prevention and correction, and to minimalize scarring.
Literally, MDA is a service meant to manually exfoliate the skin by use of a vacuum like machine. There are two types of MDA machines; those that use crystals (aluminum oxide or baking soda) and the crystal-less method. In the crystal method the technician will glide a wand across the skin. Crystals are shot out of the wand, which loosens up the dead skin laying on the surface. Then the vacuum action sucks up the dead skin and crystals. The crystal-less does the same but instead of having lose crystals, the crystals are embedded in different attachments that vary in texture or strength. The intensity of the treatment is determined by the amount of crystals used and the strength of the suction.
A MDA facial treatment essentially removes the top layer of dead skin that wants to come off anyway. Our skin is meant to “turn over” every 28 days. With age, this process slows down. Other factors such as acne, may slow down this process. MDA forces the skin act “younger” and healthier. Physical scrub washes are meant to do the same thing but due to the makeup of the scrub and often over aggressive manner in which people use the product, they tend to cause more harm than good. MDA evenly exfoliates without scratching the skin like most scrubs do.
When you remove the top layer of dead skin a couple things happen. The immediate response is a brighter skin tone. Often a dull complexion is caused by dead skin piling up on the surface. The other and most beneficial response is that it tricks the skin into thinking its injured. This forces the skin to make more healthy skin faster which includes production of collagen and elastin. It also forces blood to the surface which triggers an immune response to attack acne. Also, less dead skin leads to less clogged pores which leads to less breakouts. MDA smooths out the skin’s surface the help minimize fine lines and scars. It removes the damaged cells (hyper/hypo-pigmentation & sundamage) and promotes new and healthy skin to take its place. And lastly it increases the strength of any product put on post- treatment. Without that dead skin barrier, all active ingredients can penetrate the skin much faster and effectively.
Please note that MDA is a treatment meant to have little to no down time. Any redness or sensitivity that occurs from the treatment should not last more than a day. If you find yourself extremely irritated or with any scratches or marks left on the face, you’ve received a bad treatment. The technician was either too aggressive or failed to properly educate you on pre and post op care. In my office I perform MDA facials 90% of the time. I have worked on kids as young as 12yrs and people with skin sensitivities such as Rosacea. All have benefited from the treatment.
MDA is meant to exfoliate the skin. Therefore one must stop the use of any exfoliating products such as AHA’S, BHA’s and scrubs at least 3 days prior and 24hrs post treatment. You should also refrain from facial waxing or use of depilatories for at least 5 days pre- and post- treatment. MDA can spread rashes or herpes breakouts so you should not receive treatment if you’re experiencing this. Do not receive a MDA facial immediately before or after heavy sun exposure.
MDA is an amazing treatment that when done properly can give long lasting positive effects to the skin. Typically MDA should not be done more than once a month. Consistency is key. The effects will last longer the more regular your treatments.
Though nothing compares to a professionally done MDA treatment, here’s an at home kit that will give you similar results over time-
